Lamp, not floodlights

We have a tendency to want to know the full plan to proceed with it, especially when it comes to God. We want to be sure – because, what if God’s plan is too hard, difficult or challenging?

But His word says:

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path – Psalm 119:105

Not floodlights to shine at the full picture, but a lamp to shine for the next few steps.

We want control, God offers guidance

A floodlight gives the full picture and certainty. But God’s lamp offers guidance for the next few steps and requires our trust beyond those few steps. We don’t want to lose control when we trust in God’s few steps, but that’s exactly what God asks of us. If we had actually known the full picture, we would have given up! Think of people who had survived cancer – it took years of trusting God throughout the healing journey.

The lamp trains you to walk, not just plan

A lamp only works when we move ahead and step forward. The lamp shines forward the path you are going – a few steps at a time.

Many of us stay stuck, waiting for clarity that was never promised. Meanwhile, God is waiting for us to move forward, as He is guiding us each step of the way.

The next step is enough

It is good to plan long-term, maybe a five-year plan. However, in this fast-paced world, there are too many variables that constantly changes. If we ever wait for the perfect time, or a stable environment, it will never happen. All God is asking from us – is to say “Yes” and move forward. Clarity often comes after obedience.

What we fail to realize is that the floodlights will be so blinding that we won’t be able to see anything at all. So, God has designed the lamp to show us a few steps ahead only.

My Invitation

This is my invitation to you today: when God reveals His next steps, trust in God and move forward in them. If the lack of the big picture is scaring you, know that God is sparing you the big picture for a good reason!
